BPW Conference 2019
Attending my first conference in Wellington (5-7 April), I was impressed by how well organized it was. It was obvious that a tremendous amount of work was pre-prepared, covering everything from full reporting by current officers to well-designed breakout sessions open to the public and reports from international representatives on Sunday. The Resolutions Session was a fascinating look into how a roomful of women can conduct robust yet civil debate. Given that Resolution E2 (deposits on drink containers) was a submission by us (BPW Franklin), one couldn’t help but follow the drama of the motion, with it being withdrawn in the end.
The weekend was overall inspiring, given the quality of guest speakers: Sara Leberman (educator, sports coach) with her message of ‘bringing others with you by sharing your passion, values, and strength’; Rebecca Stewart (Pomegranate Kitchen) who manages a social enterprise through its challenges and rewards - and many others, which space doesn’t allow. I also particularly enjoyed seeing many of our Club’s members playing vital roles in this event. I would recommend all new members attend a conference. Dina (Member Franklin BPW)

Suffrage 125 - Kiwi Women Lead the World
What a beautiful day for a lovely celebration!
Thanks to all those who joined us at the expo, along the parade or for the afternoon tea.
The organisers did an amazing job coordinating all the different parts of the day. Well done to all those involved.
A special thanks to our BPW sisters from Huntly who joined us in our celebrations and Emily (BPW Tamaki) and husband Bobson for being available as official BPW Franklin photographer.
Lovely speeches from Vicky and Virginia. What a talented group we have.

BPW NZ Awards 2018
Congratulations to Franklin members who received honours at the recent BPW NZ Conference.
Dianne Glenn, founding member of BPW Franklin and Life Member of BPW Franklin now also has the honour of being a Life Member of BPW NZ. BPW NZ have a maximum of 4 Life Members at any one time so it is a very special recognition for all the hard work Dianne has put in over the years.
Vicky Mee was awarded the Daphne Chapman Award for the member who best promotes the image of BPW NZ. This is a very well deserved award. Raewyn Fricker received a Distinguished Service Award but was not present to receive the award in person. Congratulations to these wonderful ladies for all they do and representing BPW Franklin so well.

Red Bag Day 18 February 2019
Red Bag Day marks the period of extra days in the current year which women need to work to achieve the same wages that men earned during the previous financial year. The day recognises how much longer women have to work to earn the same as men in one year. The day is marked in many countries around the world and the day varies depending on the gender gap in any particular country.
Equal pay for work of equal value is not just about women getting the same pay as men for the same job, but also women getting the same pay as men for doing a different but comparable job. That is, a job involving comparable skills, years of training, responsibility, effort and working conditions.
Happy Birthday BPW
